CORAF/PAIRED PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION REVIEW MEETING

       The Executive Director NCRI Badeggi, in his opening remarks thanked his management team for attending CORAF PAIRED Project implementation and review meeting. He applauded the selection process of the team as not only gender sensitive but gender equality, as the team comprises of 3 male and 3 female. In his words, the PAIRED project is coming at a time that the world including Nigeria is facing a pandemic. He revealed that, the project will help in creating an enabling environment for rice farmers thereby increase their income and better their livelihoods.

The project coordinator, Audu Sale Dogo started his speech by appreciating the Executive Director for the opportunity given. Furthermore, he introduces the PAIRED project team;

CROSS-SECTION OF PARTICIPANTS AT THE REVIEW MEETING

 Afterwards, Audu Sale Dogo in his presentation gave a brief overview of the PAIRED project;

  • Rationale/background
  • PAIRED result framework
  • Focus crop and geographic areas
  • Paired strategies for up-scaling
  • Intervention areas
  • Partnership and collaborations.

In the course of presentation he highlighted the background of CORAF, who have successfully helped to convene a wide diversity of actors around a common Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) in west and central Africa, catalysed the development and adaptation of impressive basket of technology and innovation (T&Is) in western and central African region among others.

Also he said that, the impact-delivery agenda was not sufficiently responsive to the need and alignment of contextual programs, deployment of T&Is not massively occurred in WA and CA agricultural transformation and inadequate supply mechanisms.

Therefore, the need for capacity buildings , engagement of actors to increase public and private investments and advocate for needed policy reforms within the region.

The is aimed to increase agricultural growth, food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in West (central) Africa. The PAIRED project result framework as 3 main action points;

  • CORAF’s Capacity strengthened for effective coordination of agricultural research and development in West (and Central) Africa (Cross cutting intermediate result)
  • Innovative scaling framework for Agri-input T&Is established in WA
  • Use of quality Agri-inputs in WA must increased

He said that, PAIRED project will be assessing the capacity of existing innovation platforms and establish/revitalize and operationalize innovation platforms to promote appropriate scaling-up tools approaches, Monitoring , evaluation and learning as strategies for up-scaling of technologies.

While he was rounding up his presentation he said that, the project in Nigeria will be focusing on 2 crops maize which is handled by Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) Zaria while National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) Bageggi will be Up-scailing rice technologies which include, Improved rice seeds, Fertilizer packages and good agronomic practises (GAP). Other countries include Ghana, Benin, Mali, Niger and Senegal.

After his presentation, the top management present made a meaningful contributions based on their past experience of handling projects.

In conclusion the Executive Director promised the team of free hands and support on the part of management to achieve the set goals of the project. He also encouraged the PAIRED project team to keep working hard and abide by the laid down guidelines stated by the project sponsors (CORAF and USAID). As part of NCRI support for collaboration and partnership, the Executive Director pledge to allocate a Hilux van for the project to facilitate movement and meet the set goals and target.

The sad incident occured on Sunday 2nd December, 2018.
