Soybean Research Programme

Vision– to generate and disseminate improved technologies for soybean production in other to achieve self-sufficiency and food security in soybean as food/feed/ industrial raw materials with surplus for exports.

Mission– to conduct cost effective/ climate smart research on soybean with minimal negative effect on the environment and dissemination of appropriate technologies for their optimal utilization.

Research focus- breeding for soybean improvement and development of viable technologies from production to utilization. (Soybean value chain).

Objectives-

  • To maintain a soybean germplasm with adequate genetic diversity.
  • To develop integrated pest management (IPM) measure in the management of pest and diseases of soybean.
  • To develop and apply climate smart soybean production technologies that are economical viable.

Collaborative Objectives

  • Processing and utilization of soybean value added products for both household and industrial needs.
  • To promote gender inclusion in the soybean value chain.
  • To fabricate soybean farm machineries (planter, harvester, thresher etc.

Strategies-

  • Through hybridization and mutation for the desirable traits.
  • Evaluation of soybean lines in disease hotspot zone
  • Strengthen the efforts of breeders in identifying resistance soybean lines
  • Collaborative and timely identification of soybean diseases.
  • Improve agronomic practices (GAP) which include appropriate or recommending spacing, use of inoculant.

Synergistic Strategy

  • Collaborative value-added products.
  • Strategic gender and youth inclusion in soybean value chain.
