Rice Research Program

Introduction

Rice Research Program is one of the seven commodity-based programs of the National Cereals Research institute, Badeggiand its activities dates back to 1975, when Agricultural Research Order gave mandates to the institute to investigate the problems of Rice, Maize, Grain legumes and Sugarcane as well as those of the Farming Systems throughout Nigeria with the Headquarters at Ibadan. Rice Research Station was then located atBadeggi, where the new headquarters is now. The programcollaborates with both national and international Agricultural Research Institutions, non-governmental organizations and private organization for the delivery of research results to small and medium public research beneficiaries. The program through multi-disciplinary approach conducts adoptive research into genetic improvement of rice, improved agronomic practices of rice, soil and nutrient requirement of rice, pests and diseases of rice, and socio-economics of rice production/processing, value addition and utilization of the crops, Across all value chain of rice production, rice program has highly skilled professionals that conduct research and training.

The objectives of the program are:

  • To breed new rice varieties that will be high yielding and resistant to both biotic and abiotic stresses.
  • To develop more improved agronomic practices, water management and better weed management for rice production in Nigeria
  • To research and improve on soils and fertilizer requirement forrice production
  • To identify, study and have good knowledge of pests and diseases of rice and their management
  • To produce pure rice seeds for farmers in the country.
  • To improve on rice post-harvest practices to reduce loss in quantity and quality
  • To develop new value added products of rice and its by-products, and also improve on the existing ones.

NCRI RiceDeveloped Technologies and Innovations

  • So far 70 improved rice varieties have been released, which most farmers are using across the country.
  • Most recently two hybrid varieties (6644 Gold and TEJ Gold) were release in 2021. This willenabled the farmers increase their yields and income and the upliftment of the rural populace.
  • Production of rice breeder and foundation seeds for National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) and other certified seed company.
  • Determination of adequate plant spacing for optimum yield of rice; plant spacing of 20cmx20cm inter and antral raw spacing have been found good for low land rice production in Nigeria.
  • Determination of time, rate and type of fertilizer best for rice production in Nigeria.
  • Improved rice processing technology has been developed. This technology is presently being used by multi nationals like AGIP (Bormo Farms) in Bayelsa State, Jando and Nkume Farms in Benue State and Obasanjo Farms and other local entrepreneurs, thus improving the quality of processed rice.
  • Development of rice recipes for more utilization suck as rice milk and rice cake
  • Upland and lowland weeders has been developed and in use by peasant farmers
  • Manual rice planter is also one technology developed to ease rice production.
  • Development of low input sustainable production systems for the Resource-poor farmers.
  • Production and distribution of farmer’s guides and technical bulletins.
  • Continuous Training of subject Matter Specialists (SMSs) from the ADPs in the use of technologies developed by NCRI.
